The Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibetans, is apologizing today after a shocking video went viral showing him kissing a boy at a recent public event and telling him to suck his tongue.

The backlash to the video was immediate with social media users calling it "disgusting" and "absolutely sick." The 87-year-old Buddhist monk kissed the boy on the lips and then stuck out his tongue and asked him, "Can you suck my tongue?" Today, he is apologizing, issuing a statement which reads, "A video clip has been circulating that shows a recent meeting when a young boy asked His Holiness the Dalai Lama if he could give him a hug. His Holiness wishes to apologize to the boy and his family, as well as his many friends across the world, for the hurt his words may have caused." It goes on to say, "His Holiness often teases people he meets in an innocent and playful way, even in public and before cameras. He regrets the incident." (CBS News)
