TeeRoy's 2 Cents:

  • What a bargain. The contract is loaded with incentives. If Newton is healthy and can still play, he'll make a lot of money. If not, it won't cost the Patriots all that much.
  • Brady's gone. It's a new era in New England, but their fans expect to win and the pressure will be heavy on whoever gets the starting job.
  • The Patriots still have Bill Belichick at the helm, so they can be expected to win.
  • Newton may be asked to cheat.

The New England Patriots may be looking to Cam Newton to lead them into the post-Tom Brady era. The team signed the 31-year-old former league MVP to a one-year deal and expect him to compete for the starting job.

Newton, who played nine seasons with the Carolina Panthers and led them to an appearance in Super Bowl 50, is one of three quarterbacks on the Patriots and will likely get the starting job if he proves himself to be healthy. Injuries have plagued him the past few years. The Patriots also have 23-year-oldJarrett Stidham and 34-year-old Brian Hoyer. (TMZ)

In addition to the news of the Cam Newton signing, the Patriots were also fined $1.1 million and will lose their third-round pick in next year's draft because of a new cheating scandal. The team allegedly had its TV crew film the sidelines of a December game between the Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns. (ESPN)
