Quavo honored his late nephew TakeOff's 30th birthday by making history in his hometown.
On Tuesday, June 18, the Georgia native and the Rocket Foundation held its first-ever White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention event during the inaugural Rocket Foundation Summit in Atlanta. Quavo and the non-profit organization hosted two valuable panel discussions about the violent epidemic involving guns in the United States, and how to support youth groups to curb gun violence. Later on, Vice President Kamala Harris joined Quavo for a separate chat about solutions to reduce gun violence, how to keep communities safe, and more.
"Today, I joined @quavohuncho for the first-ever Rocket Foundation Summit on Gun Violence Prevention," Vice President Harris wrote in an Instagram. "We reflected on Quavo’s advocacy to preserve Takeoff’s legacy and discussed our work to prevent gun violence — including the Biden-Harris Administration’s Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the most significant gun safety legislation in nearly 30 years. Quavo: Thank you for bringing us together for this critical conversation. And thank you for your courage and your leadership. Together, we continue our work to save lives and keep our communities safe."
It's the second time Quavo and VP Harris have met in the name of tackling gun violence. Last year, the two connected in Washington, D.C., and created the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention the following day.
"I know there's a lot of people out there that lost their loved one to gun violence, and I think ain't nothing getting done about it," Quavo told ABC News at the time. "I'm a survivor. I was there so, at the same time, it could've been both of us gone. So I look at this as me being alive, I have to do this job and make sure that everybody is aware that losing my nephew, you could be in the same position."
After the summit, Quavo, his mother Edna Marshall and TakeOff's mom Titania Davenport received a surprise state proclamation from Atlanta's Mayor Andre Dickens. The proclamation decreed that June 18 will forever be known as TakeOff Day in the state of Georgia. The Rocket Power rapper celebrated the accomplishment at a private dinner with family and special guests at V12 Restaurant.
Kirsnick "TakeOff" Ball was a prominent member of the Migos. His life was tragically cut short in 2022 when he was shot and killed in Houston. He was only 28. Since then, Quavo and his former groupmate Offset have done everything possible to bring honor to his name. See the proclamation below.
