The New York Rangers (1-1-0) defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning (0-1-0) 5-1 on Thursday night at Madison Square Garden in New York. It was the opening game of the season for the Lightning.
Igor Shesterkin made 24 saves and had a goalie goal - the first of his career - to lead the Rangers. New York also got goals from Mika Zibanejad, Pavel Dorofeyev, Eeli Tolvanen and Gabe Perreault. Nikita Kucherov scored in the second period for the Lightning, while Andrei Vasilevskiy went 20-of-24 in net in the losing effort.
The Lightning now turn their attention to their home opener against the Washington Capitals on Saturday night. Puck drop between the Lightning and Capitals is scheduled for 7:00 PM on Saturday night.
