21 SAVAGE: New York Times Interview

TeeRoy's 2 Cents:

  • Can you imagine spending what should be one of your proudest moments trapped in a closet?
  • Savage has a responsibility to raise awareness about what thousands of immigrants are going through.
  • He never signed up to be socially conscious.
  • Last year, he stopped wearing jewelry and tried to show followers how it's cooler to flex by investing in real estate and business. This could be the next evolution of 21, the role model.
  • There are going to be a lot of eyes and ears on 21's next moves. Let's hope he chooses carefully.

The Atlanta rapper says, “I got three kids, my mama -- everything that I know is here in Atlanta. I’m not leaving Atlanta without a fight. We gon’ fight all the way till the last day even if that mean I sit in jail for 10 years.”

Savage also acknowledged what it was like to miss the Grammys. “I was stressed about getting out. The Grammys is the Grammys, but when you in jail, the Grammys is nothing. I got to watch it. By that time they had put a TV in my room… [Post] wore the 21 Savage shirt, so I felt like I was there… They didn’t have to say it ‘cause everybody knew it. It was in the air.”

Savage also said his experience gave him a respect for the system. He says he appreciates that just being rich or famous doesn’t make it easier to get off -- nor should it. But will he speak on his experiences in his music? “Not right now, cause I feel like me putting it into music got me in this situation, kind of.”

The interview is worth reading in full, to hear Savage’s takes on coming to the States a kid, how he lost his British accent, and what he thought about the memes being made about him.
