SCHOOL DAZE: 1 in 5 Teachers Unlikely to Return

A striking number of teachers say they won't return to school if classrooms are open in the fall.

TeeRoy's 2 Cents:

  • Very few schools have the physical space to accommodate social distancing inside the classroom.
  • Kids are more likely to be asymptomatic carriers of the coronavirus, and a lot of teachers are older -- and thus more at risk for serious complications.
  • A lot of parents have gained a better understanding of how tough a teacher's job really is.
  • If I were vested in the pension system and old enough to qualify, I wouldn't go back, either.

A striking number of teachers say they won't return to school if classrooms are open in the fall.

According to a new USA Todaypoll, one in five say they're unlikely to go back. And that's even with two-thirds of them saying they haven't been able to do their jobs properly via remote learning.

In a separate poll, 60 percent of parents with a school-age kid say they'll look into remote-learning alternatives if schools are open, with 30 percent saying they're "very likely" to do that.
