As the investigation into the collapse of the condo complex near Miami has begun, the death toll rose to nine on Sunday as more remains were found, while 151 people still remain unaccounted for.
Investigators of what could be the deadliest accidental building collapse in U.S. history believe it began at the bottom of the building, maybe in the underground parking garage or perhaps below it, which started the collapse that eventually became a full structural failure.
Donald O. Dusenberry, a consulting engineer who investigates structural failures, said, "It does appear to start either at or very near the bottom of the structure. It's not like there's a failure high and it pancaked down." (The New York Times)
