Hip hop history is American history. Period.

Like Biggie said, "You never thought hip-hop would take it this far."

We've come a long way since the park jams.

Historically, we don't do enough to celebrate some of hip hop's founding fathers -- maybe this means things are starting to change.

August 11th will officially be known as Hip-Hop Celebration Day in the U.S. from now on. In addition, the newly-passed Senate Resolution 331 designates August as “Hip-Hop Recognition Month” and November as the official “Hip-Hop History Month.”

As for why August 11th was selected -- that’s the day in 1973 that DJ Kool Herc hosted a back-to-school party at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx. It’s considered the day hip-hop music and culture was born. (U.S. Senate Press Gallery)
