HURRICANE IDA: Category 4 Storm Slams Into Louisiana

There's been at least one death and a million residents are without power.

UPDATE (7:00 a.m. ET): Ida has been downgraded to a tropical storm and President Biden has officially declared the storm a disaster, releasing federal funds for rescue and recovery efforts. (USA Today)

Hurricane Ida slammed into southeast Louisiana on Sunday afternoon and brought with it violent winds, flooding rains and tornadoes that are expected to move inland over the next couple of days.

Storm surge in southeast Louisiana had water levels reaching seven-feet above normal at Shell Beach, and nearly has high in Waveland, Mississippi. In the New Orleans East neighborhood of Venetian Isles flood waters were seen nearly as high as a stop sign. The area is under mandatory evacuation for those not protected by levees, WDSU-TV reported.

The flooding has come with winds of more than 100 miles per hour in Grand Isle, Louisiana. (The Weather Channel)
