The battle over abortion is heating up.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has vowed to call for a vote later in September to make the right to an abortion a federal law.
Even some Republicans are against the Texas law, which enables citizens to report those having an abortion and even those who assist those individuals.
Attorney General Merrick Garland said Monday that the Justice Department is looking into "all options" to challenge the new, strict abortion law in Texas. He promised to give support to those looking for reproductive health services and to support abortion clinics that are "under attack."
Garland made the statement just days after the Supreme Court opted not to block a Texas law that bans abortions as early as six weeks, even if the pregnancy was due to rape or incest. Observers are calling the high court's inaction the biggest threat in nearly 50 years to Roe v Wade, the historic ruling that established the right to abortion.
President Biden, who was critical of the Supreme Court's decision, had requested that the Department of Justice look into ways to fight the Texas law. (The Washington Post)
