Employees have a choice of whether or not to get the shot, but there are consequences.

United was the first airline to issue a vaccine mandate for employees.

There are plenty of vaccinated people who would be happy to take their jobs.

The airline required all employees to show proof of vaccination by Monday. It says more than 99% of its workforce is vaccinated, but there are still 593 who haven't. Some have applied for a medical or religious exemption. The others will be fired, but will also be able to save their jobs if they get the shot before their official termination meeting.

United CEO Scott Kirby said, "This was an incredibly difficult decision but keeping our team safe has always been our first priority." The airline also plans to hire 25,000 employees over the next few years and proof of vaccination will be required for employment. (NBC News)
