All three services went dark at 11:39 a.m. [ET], and stayed down for hours, the longest outage Facebook has experienced since 2008. The service's representatives were forced to use Twitter to offer updates, which were few and far between until things started slowly getting back to normal around 6 p.m
The company has not fully explained what caused the outage, only blaming "networking issues, and an unnamed employee told NBC News there was "No reason at this point to suspect anything malicious but the outage is affecting pretty much everything."
CEO Mark Zuckerberg offered an apology shortly before 7 p.m, saying "Sorry for the disruption today -- I know how much you rely on our services to stay connected with the people you care about."
