There's a good chance that the COVID pandemic could be the greatest global tragedy of our lifetimes.
One expert thinks that in some countries COVID deaths have been under reported by "a multiple of two to 10."
Then there are the COVID deniers who believe the number of deaths reported are exaggerated or haven't happened at all.
The worldwide death toll from COVID-19 surpassed five million on Monday, according to data from the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. The number is so large that it would wipe out the entire population of some major cities and smaller countries.
Perhaps even more stunning is that experts feel the total is an under-count because many countries haven't been able to accurately keep tabs on the number of deaths from coronavirus, including some African nations and India, and other countries may be purposely under-counting the numbers.
Adam Kucharski, a London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine associate professor who uses math to analyze infectious disease outbreaks, said, “All of these estimates still rely on data being available, or someone going and collecting it before antibodies and local memories wane. Globally, there will have been numerous local tragedies going unreported.” (The New York Times)
