COVID: Study Shows Parents Lied About Kids' Positive Results

  • This isn't surprising. We all know parents who have lied about COVID status. We may have even done it ourselves.
  • At the height of omicron, it would have been really awful to knowingly send your infected kid to school.
  • If everyone followed the CDC's guidelines, the viral spread could have been reigned in.

A new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association finds that a quarter of parents admitted to lying about their children's COVID status, which likely contributed to the spread of the virus.

The study questioned more than 1,700 parents during the height of the omicron variant in December of 2021. It found that a quarter of respondents lied about their kids' adherence to COVID recommendations, including those pertaining to exposure, quarantine, vaccination and testing. The most common reason parents gave for lying were "I wanted to exercise my freedom to do what I want with my child," "My child did not feel very sick" and "I wanted my child's life to feel 'normal.'"
