TESLA: Ordered To Pay Ex-Worker $3.2 Million

A former Tesla employee in California won $3.2 million in a racial harassment lawsuit on Monday. But that's only a fraction of the amount he won for the same lawsuit just a few years back.

In 2021, Owen Diaz took Tesla to court for this same racial harassment case. He claimed that the company failed to act after he complained numerous times about hearing racial slurs and seeing people draw racial symbols at work at the Fremont location. In the first trial, the jury awarded him $7 million in damages for emotional distress and a whopping $130 million in punitive damages.

The judge eventually cut that amount down to $15 million, which is what prompted Diaz to challenge the amount with a new trial.

Even though he won the suit for the second time, the jury awarded significantly less -- only $3 million in punitive damages and about $175,000 in noneconomic damages. (The New York Times)
