  • report from 2020 determined that West Maui was at significant risk for wildfires. Could something have been done to stop this from happening?
  • If only there didn't have to be such a large disaster for changes to be made.
  • The governor said the death toll may continue to rise as they become able to scope out the areas hit the hardest.

At least 96 people have been confirmed dead from the wildfires in Maui, making it the deadliest wildfire in the United States in over 100 years.

At a press conference held Saturday, Hawaii Governor Josh Green said 2,200 structures were damaged in West Maui, with about 86% of those structures being residential. The governor estimated that it's about $6 billion worth of damage.

The survivors who made it out of Lahaina before the worst of the fire have not been allowed to go back and survey the damage to their properties due to safety reasons.

Hawaiians have been sheltering on beaches and in hotels, but they say the resources are scarce and the support from the government is slow-moving. There's also plenty of questions from residents as to why none of the 80 emergency signals located throughout Maui went off when the fires began.(The New York Times)
