MAUI WILDFIRE: Death Toll Tops 100, Still Expected to Rise

Search crews have only gotten to 27% of the burn area.

TeeRoy's 2 Cents:

  • Sadly, a lot of the missing may never be found.
  • Most of the dead will likely never be positively identified.
  • Lahaina had a population of about 12,700.

Officials in Maui have confirmed at least 106 deaths in the devastating fire that has destroyed most of the city of Lahaina.

There are still hundreds of people who are missing and search and rescue crews so far have only been able to canvass about 27% of the burn area, raising fears that the death toll could still rise. Of the 106 confirmed deaths, only five have been positively identified and their families have been notified.

President Biden, who plans to visit Maui on Monday, said yesterday that all federal resources have been made available to Maui, including more than 400 FEMA personnel and 273 National Guard soldiers, and will be there "as long as it takes." FEMA has arranged for 500 hotel rooms to be made available for displaced residents and 1,000 Airbnb rooms have been made available for both residents and first responders.

Even as the search and rescue efforts continue, firefighters are still battling the wildfire which is not yet fully contained. (NBC News)
