TROPICAL STORM HILARY: Pelts Southern California.

Unrelated to the hurricane, there was also a 5.1 magnitude earthquake that shook Southern California on Sunday afternoon. No major damage or injuries were reported from the earthquake. (NBC News)

UPDATE (9:45 a.m. ET): Hilary has been downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone as it treks northward through Nevada. It still brings the threat of flash flooding, particularly in mountainous areas.

Tropical Storm Hilary made landfall in Mexico on Sunday night, bringing “catastrophic and life-threatening flooding” along with it. The storm is expected to continue moving north through California, potentially causing flooding issues in the southwestern United States. One person was killed in Mexico's Baja California peninsula when the storm touched down there on Sunday.

Though Hurricane Hilary has been downgraded to a tropical storm, it has still caused major flooding in southern California. President Joe Biden said there are pre-positioned resources set aside to assist with expected damage. LA public schools are closed today (Monday) as an extra precaution.
