Hip-hop stars are mourning the loss of an OG.
Bun B took to Instagram on Monday to share the heartbreaking news that Detroit native Bo$$, the first female MC signed to Def Jam Recordings, had passed away at the age of 54. The Trill OG wrote, “Rest in peace to my big sis, Lichelle Laws A.K.A. Boss. One of the best female MCs and a dear friend. Give Rick Royal a hug for me. Long live the Org!”
Jermaine Dupri, Jadakiss, 9th Wonder, Ed Lover, Lloyd Banks, and Slim Thug were some of the first of Boss’s peers to pay tribute through social media.
DJ Premier recalled a studio session back in 1993 where he and Boss had a good time “drinking 40’s, puffin lah and vibing.” He also recalled a “Deeper Remix” that never saw the light of day, asking, “Can someone at Def Jam find that in the vaults? I want a copy of that remix. Sleep peacefully, Queen.”
DJ Battlecat said, “I hate posting but people got to know who she was. From Detroit’s very own first fire incredible M.C. Bo$$ to come out and set the tone with gangsta rap in a lyrical, heartfelt way.”
Warren G wrote, “RIP Lichelle A.K.A. Bo$$, one of the dopest females to rap and was a good friend and label mate.”
