UPDATE 8 p.m. ET: July 21st, the day that President Biden suspended his campaign for re-election, has become the biggest day for Democratic donations online since 2020. More than $30 million was raised as Vice President Kamala Harris announced she'd work towards claiming the nomination.

UPDATE: Vice President Kamala Harris released a statement saying she will run in Biden's place.

She said, “I am honored to have the President’s endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this nomination." She thanked Biden for his "selfless and patriotic act" of stepping down. Several other Democrats have also endorsed Harris. (The New York Times)

President Joe Biden has dropped out of the 2024 presidential election.

The president announced the news on social media on Sunday, saying he has decided not to accept the nomination. He wrote, "It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term." He endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to replace him on the ballot.

Democratic leaders across the country have been calling for the 81-year-old to bow out of the race due to concerns about his mental fitness. The Democratic National Convention, where the Democratic party's nominee will be chosen, starts on August 19th in Chicago. (The New York Times)
