Theft of anything is a crime, but for 23% of Americans, it's something they admit to doing anyway. According to a recent LendingTree.com survey, nearly a quarter of Americans say they have shoplifted in the past year and 90% of them say they've done it because of inflation. Reasons given by people for shoplifting include "Items are too expensive to afford, "To make ends meet," "To save a few dollars," and "I like the rush of shoplifting." Grocery stores at the top target of shoplifters, followed by department stores and convenience stores.
